Turkey Day 2010

Thanksgiving this year was very successful. We had a small group of Navy friends over, and the whole day was low-key, wonderful, and full of delicious food. And best of all? I had on stretchy maternity pants, which made Thanksgiving pretty amazing…I might have to break them out every Thanksgiving from here on out!

I always start out the Thanksgiving ritual by setting the table the night before. I find that by doing this Number 1: I can enjoy the table that much longer and Number 2: It makes the day-of go pretty darn smoothly. I covered our table with a standard canvas drop cloth (you can find these at your local hardware store for $7 or so). We used drop cloths for curtains in the Man Cave last summer, and they were so versatile, we bought three extra to have on hand for tablecloths. After the drop cloth “tablecloths” I used our rustic wooden placemats to give the table some texture.

We only have six china places settings, so I just used our standard dishes. I laid a burnt orange napkin on each plate and topped with a red pear. I just love the way it turned out! The centerpieces were simple vases filled with candles and cranberries. Lastly, I sprinkled some smooth stones around the vases, which not only gave the table more texture, but also brought in a sense of family for me. You see, these stones, when flipped over reveal the names of friends and family members who attended one of my bridal showers! My best friend Leslie had people sign these stones rather than a guest book–I thought Thanksgiving was the perfect time to break them out!

The other thing I do the night before Thanksgiving is label all the serving dishes so I know exactly what I’m going to put in each one. This makes that last-minute crunch time easy peasy, as I already know what’s going where and I’m not pulling serving dishes and utensils out of the cabinets at the last minute.

The morning of Thanksgiving I get up, make breakfast (which I’ll share with you tomorrow), and watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade with my hubby. He actually marched as part of the honor band in the parade in college! I love to watch all the Broadway shows perform in Herald Square–especially the Rockettes. I just love them!

About halfway through the parade, I start prepping the food. Our menu this year:

Appetizers:

Orange-cranberry dip and crackers & Bloomin’ Onion Bread

The star of this course was the Bloomin’ Onion Bread. It was so easy and YUMMY! I’m ready to make it again very soon.

Main Course:

Pioneer Woman’s Dinner rolls

Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Turkey with gravy

Mashed potatoes

Cranberry sauce two ways (the homemade stuff and the weird congealed stuff from a can)

And friends brought over sweet potatoes, stuffing, and green bean casserole

I love all this stuff…but I really loved the turkey the Hubby did. He rubbed it in Italian seasoning and butter, wrapped it in bacon, stuffed it with bacon, and then roasted it breast down in an oven bag with apples, cranberries, onions, rosemary, and parsley. It was moist and flavorful and cooked really quickly! What’s not to love about that?!?

Dessert:

Vermont spice cake with maple cream cheese frosting

And friends brought cranberry bread pudding and berry pie.

I just LOVED this spice cake recipe. I’m definitely adding it to my fall repertoire. It was deeeeelish.

Here’s a shot of our whole group together:

And here’s the aftermath…

Snazzy Save the Dates

I was elated a few months ago when two friends I work with got engaged! Woo hoo! I just received the save the date for their destination wedding and it is so cute I had to share it with you! Here’s the initial packaging–adorable. Love the little luggage tag.

And this is the front. Now remember, we all work at a school. Inside is an explanation of the picture “A few years ago, before Jana and Wade knew they were going to get married, two of their students drew them this picture , a prophetic vision of the date you are saving. The student artists are now mysteriously locked in a studio being forced to draw pictures of Jana and Wade winning the lottery.” Hilarious. The humor in this funny little explanation perfectly reflects the couple!

Inside the suitcase are all the juicy details about making travel arrangements, etc. These Save the Dates were printed by Chris Shanley at Big Kitchen Papers and assembled by the bride.

Congrats Jana and Wade! And great work on these Save the Dates!

Halloween Special Effects

As promised, today I’m sharing with you two videos of the special effects my Hubby put together for our Halloween party. This first effect was in our guest bedroom window, which you walk by when you are walking to our front door. The Hubby assembled it using some pvc pipe, a little motor, a foam skull, some fishing line, cloth, and a black light. The end result was pretty awesome!

This next effect my Hubby worked on for quite awhile. We went to Disneyland this summer, and if you’ve been recently and ridden Pirates of the Caribbean you’ll remember the recent addition of Davy Jones over a mist of fog that you sail right through at the beginning of the ride. Here’s a clip from the ride.

So after going through this fog project, The Hubby says, “I’m totally building something like that for Halloween.” He did a bunch of research and ended up building this box:

When hung above our front door, this contraption basically made a sheet of fog. We had my cousin Annie film a few creepy clips which I edited together and we projected onto the sheet of fog. And this was the end result:

All in all, it turned out pretty well! I love that I have a Hubby who can look at something like that and then go figure out how to make it. I will never cease to be amazed.

And that, my friends, concludes my Halloween wrap-up. Stay tuned tomorrow as we return to our regularly scheduled programming–which will now include a new subject: nursery preparations!!!

A few Halloween details…

Many of the details of our Halloween decor were very similar to our party last year, so I’m not going to share those again (well that, and my dear hubby the photographer FORGOT to take pics of the evening!!!), but I do have pictures of  a few of the new details:

First let me show you an addition to our food offerings. Along with dips, cookies, and the like, I put out a meat and cheese tray:

Gross, eh? I just bought a plastic skull and coated it in cream cheese and then covered that in ham. The effect was pretty great!

The hubby had several big projects that he’s been working on for quite some time. Two of them are videos that I’ll share with you tomorrow, but he also made this little addition to our Halloween collection:

This guy hung out for most of the night in the shower (until several of the hubby’s friends brought him out quite late in the evening for some *ahem* inappropriate photos).  He was actually pretty easy to make. The hubby used pvc pipe, hangers, zip ties, and a store-bought skull to make the skeleton. He then used panty hose to cover the body (with socks for feet and rubber gloves for hands)  and stuffed the panty hose with newspaper. Another couple layers of panty house intermixed with liquid latex and brown paint and “Ta Da!”–there you have it. A corpse!

Not that you can really tell it in this picture, but our skeleton sat for the evening in a self rocking rocking chair.

The hubby rigged a motor (I think for car windshield wipers) to a chain which was attached to the chair. When the motor’s arm rotated around, it pulled the chain which in turn pulled the chair. It was really simple, but super spooky!

And those are a few of the details from our Halloween bash. Come back tomorrow for part II!
