Q+A

What possessed you to write a blog?

I’ve been an avid blog reader for some time, and my friends jokingly started telling me I should start a magazine to compete with a certain domestic diva. And while I felt that particular goal was a little lofty, a blog seemed like it might be manageable. I mentioned the idea to my hubby and he thought it was a great idea; however,  I was still a little intimidated by the idea, but after watching Julie and Julia, I immediately went home and started blogging, and I haven’t looked back since!

What kind of camera do you use?

I mostly use a Nikon D60, although when I don’t have that with me I sometimes just use the camera on my iPhone! I’d like to thank my hubby at this point, because he takes a lot of the pictures for my blog!

Why are you such an organizing freak?

This is a great question.  I was a VERY messy child.  My mom would have to clear a path at night when she came to tuck me in as there were so many toys covering the floor of my bedroom. Then one day, SNAP, I was a neat freak, and I began organizing everything.  I think it was the Miss Piggle-Wiggle effect. I’ve been the same ever since.

Why do you throw so many parties?

I love entertaining, and one of the perks of being a military wife is that we have lots of friends and lots of occasions to throw parties!  Someone is always have a baby or coming to a new job or leaving an old job or we’re getting together to play BUNCO or discuss a book at Book Club, etc.  Or maybe we just feel like having some friends over…sometimes I just need an excuse to throw a party!

Why do you use so many exclamation points!?!

I apologize if my overuse of the exclamation point offends anyone!  I’m just a happy person!  And I like to express my joy for life with exclamation points!  AT LEAST I DON’T WRITE ALL MY POSTS IN ALL CAPS!

What do you do when your husband is gone?

I go out with friends, I watch movies, I take long walks with our babies, I learn the “Thriller” routine, I watch trashy television shows that I try avoid when my hubby is home, I bake a lot, I work out to counteract the baked goods I consume, I read, I redecorate my house, I call all my childhood friends.  Basically, I do anything to keep myself from sitting alone at home feeling sorry for myself!

Where do you get inspiration for your projects?

All over the place!  I love Pintrest; I read Martha Stewart Living and Real Simple; I read oodles of blogs; I scan through home decorating books (my favorite-Home Rules by Nate Berkus); I go to designer show houses when I can; I visit my friends’ homes; I watch movies; I go to retail stores and look at their displays; and I sketch.  I keep a book full of ideas for the future with sketches, magazine clippings, and website urls, so I don’t forget anything!

Why is your dog’s name Paul?

Funny story.  A few years ago, when we were first talking about buying a house, I got really excited about the possibility of being able to have a dog.  Up until then, we’d lived in apartments or condos where we weren’t allowed to have pets.  I know dog ownership probably isn’t the best reason to jump into real estate, but that’s another story.  So as my hubby and I were gearing up for the house hunt, we started talking more and more about the dog we would soon bring home to our new home.  I think “Paul” might have initially came from the dog “Paul Anka” in Gilmore Girls, but I’m not really sure, either way, somehow “Paul” became the name of our future furry friend. We would tour homes and say, “Oh, Paul is going to LOVE this backyard.”  Our real estate agent would say, “Oh, you have a dog?.”  To which I’d respond, “ummm…No.  Paul’s our future dog.”  So by the time we finally got a dog (on Craigslist!), we HAD to name him Paul! And there you have it!

*Note: While we are living in Japan, Paul is living with family in North Carolina. We are allowed to bring pets here, but our yard is a postage stamp, and we decided it’d be better for him in North Carolina. He is doing very well, and we look forward to being reunited with him when we return to the US!
