Day 7.

61. Need a bedside table? Try using a stray chair!

62. Pull out that bag of seashells you collected at the beach last summer and throw them in a bowl (or a vase or a basket) and set them on a stack of books on your shelves.

63. All that artwork you have from your kiddos, nieces, nephews, etc., frame it (and  then replace it on a regular basis as your kiddos grow).

64. Do you have crazy colored tile in your bathroom but no budget to replace it right now? Paint your bathroom a complimentary color, like this example from Real Simple.

65. When you need a boost, bring fresh flowers into your home.  They look great on your kitchen table, on your dresser, in your bathroom…or all of the above!

66. Try angling your bed in a corner.  This can add a whole different feel to your bedroom and this configuration may even help your room flow better!

67. Use an old saucer as a soap dish in your bathroom–this is perfect for a shabby chic look!

68. Have a photo printed larger than your standard 4×6, 5×8, or 8×10 sizes and frame it.  It will make an amazing statement!

69. Try using old wooden milk crates as storage for towels in your bedroom/ rain boots in your coat closet/ toys in your playroom.

70. That bulletin board in your office…paint it.  Go wild–paint the frame AND the cork.

Day 6

My dear aunt took me to my first ever tennis tourny in Indian Wells today.  It was pretty awesome (and I didn’t even burn myself, thank you SPF 50)!  And tomorrow…I’m off to run my 5K.  Pray for me. :I Tomorrow evening I’ll let you know how it goes!  For now, I’ll leave you with a few more of my 100 Decorating Ideas!

51. Stretch  and staple a piece of funky fabric over a piece of canvas from a craft store for instant wall art.  Here’s a great example from Real Simple.

52.  Take all the magnets off the front of your refrigerator.  Your kitchen will look neater.

53. Go around your home and look from floor to ceiling at each room.  Are you happy with the ceiling? The light fixtures? The decor?  The window treatments? The paint? The furniture? The flooring? Make a list of things to replace, and set aside a small budget ($50-$100 or so) to start buying these things on a monthly basis.  It’s a lot less intimidating than dropping a few thousand dollars all at once to “re-decorate” a room.

54. Make sure you have a doormat.  Nothing is more unwelcoming than a front door with no mat!

55. No budget for a bed frame right now?  Use an old painted door (which you can sometimes find for FREE on craigslist) hung horizontally instead!

56. If you are unsure about your abilities to decorate a room by yourself, go the paint department at your local hardware store and bring home as many paint chips as you can carry.  Pick a shade of white or cream, a shade of black/brown/grey, and then a feature color. These colors are your guide. Buy everything in these shades.  You should be safe. (Note: I’m not saying that you can’t incorporate other colors, but you will be safe with this tip).

57. All those candles you have on display around your home?  Light them!

58. Create an inspiration board.  Put a bulletin board in your office and tack up paint chips you like, fabric samples, pictures from magazines…nothing is more motivating than seeing your inspiration right in front of you!

59. Paint a section of wall with chalkboard paint.  It will add a bit of whimsy to your room!

60. Don’t be afraid to try a DIY project.  Do you want to sew your own curtains/ refinish an end table/ build a bookcase?  Whatever that DIY project is, don’t be scared to tackle it alone!  There are so many resources out there on the Internet and what’s the worst thing that can happen?  You’ll completely screw everything up, and where would you be then? In exactly the same position you were to begin with (curtain-less, endtable-less, bookcase-less) which is where you are now anyway…so go ahead…try it!

Day 5.

I am EXHAUSTED and it’s 1:02am, so I’m going to round out our top 50 here in Day 5. 50 down, 50 to go…

46. Invest in a nice stainless steel trash can.  I know.  The last thing you want to drop dough on is a  $100 trash can.  But trust me, it’s worth it! This is the one we have , well actually we have two (one for recycling) and I love it.

47.  If there is an item you use every day…like a power plug in your living room for your computer or a kettle to make tea in the kitchen…rather than constantly taking them out and putting them away, find a way to incorporate them into your room!  I have the two aforementioned issues, so I brought a bright red kettle and I leave it out on the stove and use it as a kitchen accent piece.  We purchased a power squid, which stays neatly tucked right under our couch, always ready to be used to plug in our laptops!

48. A nicely framed piece of art ALWAYS looks great over a fireplace.

49. Install blackout curtains in your bedroom. You won’t regret it.

50. Keep out-of-season decor in boxes in the garage, but put non-seasonal decor that you don’t have out right now in a more easily accessible place.  I have a cabinet in the Man Cave devoted to my decorating needs: candles, vases, baskets, apothecary jars, etc.

Day 4 of the Countdown (Twenty Dollar Tuesdays!)

In honor of Twenty Dollar Tuesdays, the ten items on today’s edition of 100 Decorating Ideas can all be done for under $20! Enjoy!

36. Cruise www.craigslist.com on a regular basis. There are great deals to be had on craigslist, but you need to get in the habit of looking on a regular basis to find that diamond in the rough. I bought this headboard for $10!

37. Spend $20 on new hand towels for your kitchen in one color and get rid of any towels that don’t match your kitchen or are too shabby to continue to reside in your kitchen.

38. Play mood music.  Whether it’s a classical CD or Frank Sinatra, mood music makes me so happy!  It makes me feel like I’m in a hotel lounge.

39. Clean out your coat closet so guests can actually use it!

40. If you feel motivated, use an unexpected color to brighten up the inside of your coat closet. I love this one from Real Simple:

41. Install new house numbers. This website has some great ones!

42. Paint your front door your favorite color. Mine is red!

43. Paint your mailbox to match your front door.

44. Keep your towels out on your bathroom counter in a fancy basket.

45. Identify a place you don’t typically spend a lot of time.  Rearrange your furniture or put something there that will force you to use that space!

And with that…I’m off to bed! See you back here tomorrow!
