A few Halloween details…

Many of the details of our Halloween decor were very similar to our party last year, so I’m not going to share those again (well that, and my dear hubby the photographer FORGOT to take pics of the evening!!!), but I do have pictures of  a few of the new details:

First let me show you an addition to our food offerings. Along with dips, cookies, and the like, I put out a meat and cheese tray:

Gross, eh? I just bought a plastic skull and coated it in cream cheese and then covered that in ham. The effect was pretty great!

The hubby had several big projects that he’s been working on for quite some time. Two of them are videos that I’ll share with you tomorrow, but he also made this little addition to our Halloween collection:

This guy hung out for most of the night in the shower (until several of the hubby’s friends brought him out quite late in the evening for some *ahem* inappropriate photos).  He was actually pretty easy to make. The hubby used pvc pipe, hangers, zip ties, and a store-bought skull to make the skeleton. He then used panty hose to cover the body (with socks for feet and rubber gloves for hands)  and stuffed the panty hose with newspaper. Another couple layers of panty house intermixed with liquid latex and brown paint and “Ta Da!”–there you have it. A corpse!

Not that you can really tell it in this picture, but our skeleton sat for the evening in a self rocking rocking chair.

The hubby rigged a motor (I think for car windshield wipers) to a chain which was attached to the chair. When the motor’s arm rotated around, it pulled the chain which in turn pulled the chair. It was really simple, but super spooky!

And those are a few of the details from our Halloween bash. Come back tomorrow for part II!

Halloween Invitations

I’m so excited to share with you our Halloween invitations for this year! I’m still looking for a picture of our invitations last year, and when I find them, I’ll share them with you. Until then, you’ll just have to enjoy this year’s invites!

Here’s what they look like when you first receive them:

And when you pull it out you see this:

How awesome is that? It’s a “Death Report” and an X-Ray! They were super easy to make: the X-Ray is just a copy of an image I found off the Internet copied onto a transparency (remember those?). A box of 100 transparencies was only $20 or so. A box of 100 manilla envelopes was $8, and the Death Report was just plain paper. Here’s a close-up of that:

Since it’s hard to read I’m including the text below:

Office of the Ventura County Coroner

Death Report

Case #:   412-586

Date and Hour Autopsy Performed:   October 16, 2010, 7:30pm

Place of Death:      Merritt Manor 1234 Main Street Smithville, CA

Dress at Time Of Death:            In Costume

Details of Death:    Deceased was enjoying a Halloween party at Merritt Manor, including light munchies and his own libations, when he was struck with a large knife in his skull.

Contact:   To report further information (or to RSVP) please contact Kate at (555) 555-5555 or at ThisAmericanWife@yahoo.com by October 9.

Attachments:    See X-Ray

And then I found a body outline on the internet and just drew in a knife. After copying them, I just put a red “confidential” stamp on each invite. And TA-DA!

The reactions to the invite have been priceless. A couple people were pretty freaked out before they figured out what it was! Either way, it’s sure to make an impression on guests and will definitely set the mood for the party!!!

Halloween 2009-Part II

Alright folks, I’m back with Part II of the Halloween 2009 recap, so let’s get right to it!

Below is a picture of the dining room, where we served the desserts. Here’s a shot of the room before we had everything set up, but it shows off the overall look. Spooky, eh?

And here it is set up with all the food. We served ghostly cupcakes, candy corn trail mix, eyeball cake balls, skeleton pretzel rods, chocolates, pumpkin swirl brownies, and courtesy of my friend Jenn, carmel apples! The apothecary jars held spooky entrails.

Here are some of the apothecary jars up close I LOVED how these turned out.

And here’s the others.  FYI. I found these at Michaels. And if you don’t already know, at Michaels, almost every time you check out, you get a coupon, usually for 40% of one item (good for the next week). These apothecary jars ranged from $3.00 to $25.00, so I just spent a few weeks and bought one at a time using that coupon! They ended up being much more inexpensive than if I would have bought them all at once. The labels I just stuck on with rubber cement, and easily came off, so I can use them throughout the year for other decor purposes.

Here is one of the bookshelves. That little picture was a Halloween treat from my mom , and is so creepy! From one angle it looks like an old black and white picture of a little girl, from another angle she looks like a little demon. You can find the pictures at  The Ghoulish Gallery.

Here is the other bookshelf.

And there we have it…that concludes the 2009 Halloween tour! I can’t wait to share our invites with you tomorrow!

Halloween Window Animations

So this isn’t quite my Halloween style, and just to clarify, this isn’t my Halloween decor, but I was thinking about this video today (I found it last year when looking for ideas for our house), and wanted to share it with you! The guy who made this is an animator, and has his own website  www.hallowindow.com where you can buy animations for your own house, and he has many more now, but I just love this original video. Check it out (and make sure your sound is turned up!):
